What an MOT doesn't check
The MOT isn't a service. It doesn't look at the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, and it doesn't change any oil or filters. A car can pass its MOT and still need a service, so it's worth keeping both up to date.
How defects are graded
| Category | Result |
|---|---|
| DangerousA direct risk to road safety or the environment. The vehicle must not be driven until it's repaired. | Fail |
| MajorCould affect safety or the environment. Must be repaired straight away. | Fail |
| MinorNo significant effect on safety. Repair as soon as possible. | Pass |
| AdvisorySomething to keep an eye on, as it could become a problem. | Pass |
Quick checks before your MOT
A surprising number of MOT fails are simple things you can check on your drive in five minutes:
- Lights. Walk round with the lights on and the hazards flashing. Check the number plate light and brake lights too (reverse up to a window).
- Tyres. Look for cuts and bulges, and check the tread. A 20p coin's outer band should disappear into the grooves.
- Wipers and washers. Top up the screen wash and check the blades don't smear.
- Windscreen. Chips in the driver's line of sight over 10mm can fail. Many insurers repair chips for free.
- Warning lights. An engine, ABS or airbag light on the dash is often a fail. Let us know when you book.
- Horn and seatbelts. Give the horn a press and tug each belt sharply to check it locks.
