MOT questions and answers

Everything Telford drivers usually ask us about MOTs. Can't find your answer? Call us on 01952 588005.

When is my MOT due?
A vehicle's first MOT is due on the third anniversary of its registration, then every year. You can check the date for free on GOV.UK with the number plate, and we'll send you a reminder each year if you'd like.
How early can I get an MOT?
Up to a month (less a day) before the current MOT runs out, and you keep the same renewal date. Testing earlier than that is allowed, but the new MOT then runs for a year from the test date.
How much is an MOT in Telford?
At Madeley Testing Station: cars £45, motorcycles £28, three-wheelers £37.80, minibuses £55 and large vans £55, all with a free retest within 10 working days. See MOT prices.
How long does an MOT take?
Around 45 minutes to an hour for a car. Longer if repairs are needed. You can wait in our lounge or drop off and collect.
What do I need to bring?
Just the vehicle, and the locking wheel nut key if it has one. MOT records are kept online by DVSA, so you don't need your old certificate or logbook.
Do I get a paper MOT certificate?
The result is recorded with DVSA straight away, which is what the police and insurers check. You can view or print the certificate any time on GOV.UK.
Can I drive without an MOT?
Only to a pre-booked MOT, or to a garage for repairs required by a failed MOT. Otherwise driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and may invalidate your insurance.
What if my car fails?
You'll get the fail list and a price for repairs before any work starts. If it has a dangerous defect it mustn't be driven until fixed. The retest is free within 10 working days. See failed your MOT.
Will an engine warning light fail the MOT?
Usually, yes. The engine management light, ABS, airbag, power steering and tyre-pressure warning lights can all cause a fail. Let us know when you book and we can check it first.
Do electric cars need an MOT?
Yes, from three years old, the same as petrol and diesel cars. They skip the exhaust emissions test but everything else is checked.
Do classic cars need an MOT?
Vehicles over 40 years old that haven't been substantially changed can be exempt. You can still choose to have one, and many owners do for peace of mind.
Do you test motorcycles and vans?
Yes. We have a dedicated motorcycle bay and a Class 7 bay for large vans and motorhomes, as well as testing three-wheelers and minibuses.
Do you do free MOTs?
No. Free or very cheap MOTs are usually paid for through repairs. We charge a fair, fixed price, below the DVSA maximum, and only do repairs you've agreed to.
