Class 1 and Class 2: which is my bike?
- Class 1: motorcycles, mopeds and scooters with an engine up to 200cc, with or without a sidecar.
- Class 2: motorcycles over 200cc, with or without a sidecar.
The price is the same either way: £28, under DVSA's £29.65 maximum. Electric motorcycles and scooters need an MOT too, from three years old.
A proper motorcycle bay
Bikes aren't squeezed in between cars here. We have a dedicated motorcycle MOT bay, so the tester can get a proper look at the brakes, suspension and frame, and you're not left waiting behind the car queue.
What a motorcycle MOT checks
- Brakes, discs, pads and brake lines
- Steering head bearings and handlebars
- Front forks and rear suspension
- Wheels, tyres and wheel bearings
- Drive chain, sprockets and chain guard
- Frame condition and security
- Lights, indicators, horn and reflector
- Exhaust noise and emissions
- Fuel system leaks
- Registration plate and VIN
- Stands, footrests and mirrors (where fitted)
- Sidecar mountings, if you have one
Before you bring it in
A few quick checks can save a fail: make sure every bulb works including the number plate light, the chain isn't slack or dry, the tyres have at least 1mm of tread across three-quarters of the width, and the horn works. Aftermarket exhausts must be road-legal and not too loud.
When does a motorcycle need an MOT?
From the third anniversary of first registration, then every year. Bikes over 40 years old that haven't been substantially changed can be exempt, but many owners still like the reassurance of a test.
If your bike fails, we'll explain what needs doing and the retest is free within 10 working days.
