What is a Class 4 MOT?
Class 4 is the MOT most drivers need. It covers:
- Cars, estates, hatchbacks and 4x4s
- Electric and hybrid cars (they still need an MOT, just without the exhaust emissions test)
- Taxis and private hire cars with up to 8 passenger seats
- Motorhomes (motor caravans)
- Goods vans up to 3,000 kg design gross weight, such as a Transit Custom, Vivaro or Berlingo
- Three-wheelers over 450 kg unladen weight
Not sure of your van's weight? It's the "maximum permissible mass" on the plate inside the door or under the bonnet, and on the V5C (box F1). Vans over 3,000 kg need a Class 7 MOT.
How much is a car MOT in Telford?
A Class 4 car MOT at Madeley Testing Station is £45. DVSA allows test centres to charge up to £54.85, so you pay £9.85 less than the maximum, and the retest is free if you bring the car back within 10 working days. There's no VAT on MOT fees, and no hidden extras.
When does my car need an MOT?
A car needs its first MOT on the third anniversary of its registration, then every year after that. You can check the date for free on GOV.UK with just the number plate. You can have the MOT up to a month (less a day) early and keep your renewal date, so it's worth booking a few weeks ahead.
Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000, and it can make your insurance invalid. The one exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT.
What we check
The tester works through DVSA's MOT inspection manual, checking the parts that keep you and other road users safe: brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, the windscreen, wipers and mirrors, the body and structure, the fuel system and exhaust emissions. The engine, clutch and gearbox aren't part of the MOT. The full MOT checklist.
How long does it take?
About 45 minutes to an hour. Our waiting lounge has comfy seats and hot drinks, or drop the car off when we open at 7:25am and we'll ring you with the result.

If your car fails
You'll get a list of what failed and a price to put it right before we touch anything. Most repairs can be done on site the same day, and the retest is free within 10 working days. What to do if your car fails its MOT.
