Class 4 or Class 7: which does my van need?
It depends on the van's design gross weight (the "maximum permissible mass" on the plate in the door shut, and box F1 on the V5C):
| Van weight | MOT and price |
|---|---|
| Up to 3,000 kge.g. Transit Connect, Berlingo, Partner, Caddy, Vivaro, Transit Custom, Trafic | Class 4: £45 |
| 3,001 to 3,500 kge.g. long-wheelbase Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Master, Movano, Lutons and dropsides | Class 7: £55 |
Vans over 3,500 kg are HGVs, tested at a DVSA test facility rather than an MOT garage.
A Class 7 bay that fits
Plenty of garages can't take a long-wheelbase, high-roof van. Our Class 7 bay is built for them, with room for a big van or motorhome. Motorhomes are tested as Class 4, but they go in the big bay too.
Keep your van on the road
A van off the road costs you money. Drop it off at 7:25am and most vans are tested and ready the same morning. If it fails, you'll get a price for the repairs straight away and we can usually fix it on site, with the retest free within 10 working days.
Common van MOT fails
- Brake imbalance or worn discs and pads (vans work their brakes hard)
- Tyres, especially uneven wear on the front
- Bulbs, including the third brake light and number plate lamp
- Load area: insecure bulkheads or body damage with sharp edges
- Corrosion around suspension and brake pipes
- Diesel smoke, often from a blocked DPF or EGR problem
- Engine warning lights that affect the test, such as ABS or airbag lights
